You plan to turn onto a city street from a stop. You need a gap in traffic that is about:

1 block, 1/4 of a block, 2/3 of a block, 1/2 a block, or 100 feet?

[this was a question on a practice test at driver's ed. there were two different tests, with all of these answers. however, in the answer sheet, two different answers were given. i need the correct one.]

This is crazy, there is no one correct answer for this. There are way too many variables, like the speed of traffic, the quality of your sight line, whether you plan to make a left your or a right turn into traffic, etc.

I agree with the first answer. You can't possibly determine how much space you need when you are turning. Now here is what is true. When turning you should never turn so wide that you come close to colliding with another vehicle. So the best way to turn without turning too wide or sharp is to do the "hand over hand" method. This gives you enough space to turn safely. Just don't turn too fast but turn slowly and let your wheels be in line close to the curb but not that close. As far as turning into traffic, there are too many variables. You have to judge space, other vehicles, even weather conditions. This question isn't that easy to answer because it depends on the situation.
