Help! Stuck on red light while yielding for left turn. I m so confused.?

I took my practical driving test today and I immediately got disqualified because of a scenario, and this is my biggest question.

The examiner had told me to turn left. It was a solid green light so, I yield and let all the upcoming cars pass first.

However, when all the cars finished passing and as I was about to continue my left turn, a kid on a bicycle was approaching and was about to cross the street, which made me not go for the left turn, but the kid on the bicycle decided to change his direction and turn around in a different direction instead, and while that happened, the light went red and I was stuck yielding in the middle of the intersection.

I didn t want to be stuck there because cars from the other lanes were approaching and I would have blocked the intersection, so I dedcided to make the left turn on a red light just so I wouldnt block the intersection.

Was it a lose-lose situation?

Whatould have I done? Should I just have went for the left turn?
So devastated about failing :( please help.

On the test, you wait outside the intersection, behind the stop line, until it is clear for you to go for the left turn. You do not go into the middle of the intersection until you can see that you will be able to complete the turn before the light turns red. By going into the middle of the intersection, you make it lose-lose. You need to be outside the intersection, where cars are supposed to wait when the light is red, so that if the light does turn red, you won't be blocking traffic.

No idea where you live and what the law says.In some states you aren't supposed to pull into the intersection unless you can complete your turn. The examiner told you why he failed you didn't he?
