Red means stop. You should never turn left or go straight against a red light.

When it is green, you must first yield to oncoming traffic and only when it is clear can you turn left. In your example, if there is no other traffic, both cars can proceed at the same time if they are careful to avoid each other in the intersection (avoid turning too wide). Also be aware that the car across from you might have it's turn signal on by accident and will actually proceed straight through the intersection, which will cause an accident with your left turn and it will then legally be your fault for not yielding to oncoming traffic. So you should not start crossing his lane until you are certain he is turning, such as by seeing that he has changed direction and begun to move across your lane.

Yellow means that it is about to turn red, so you should not begin moving into the intersection at that time. You should only proceed through the intersection if it is too late to stop safely.

The traffic light colors are green, yellow, and red. There are no "orange" lights.

You can turn left on green or yellow. You cannot turn left on red.

IN that situation, no one can take a left on red.

Why don't you wait until your Driver's Ed teacher gets to that point in his lesson plan and ASK HIM!

Wow...have you taken a driving test? If you say "Yes", I won't believe you. How do you not understand this simple of a driving concept?
