Question:
Reporting a Dangerous Drivers (california)?

It came to my attention a few years back that my Dad's physical abilities behind the wheel are lacking quite a bit. Well this last week two situations arose, while he was driving, both of which could have been avoided had his reflexes and coordination been up to snuff.

I am concerned. I know that should he lose his ability to drive that he will be crushed, but I know that if he harms someone while behind the wheel it will kill him (spiritually).

I need to know- in California, how do I get the law involved before something dire happens? Because he will hear none of this- "you need to stop driving," from anyone and take it seriously.

Can anyone direct me to the proper channels? (Once directed I should be able to find my way.)

I strongly believe that it is your responsibility to convince your farther to stop driving, if you feel his driving became dangerous. You might want to think hard about some substitute activities, to make him cooperate. I know it is hard and heart breaking, I feel for you and for him...

Back in 1991 my ex-husband who was a true idiot put a cherry bomb on my 1967 Ford Fairlane. Now the problem was he didn't attach the back of it underneath the car so it dragged on the ground with sparks flying and I had a gas leak to top it off.

So I got the bright idea that if I had a fix it ticket for it he would have to fix it or something bad would happen to him if he didn't.

So I went to the Manteca Police Department and walked up the the counter and asked to speak to an officer.

When one emerged from the back room I told him that I needed him to give me a fix it ticket because my idiot husband put a cherry bomb on my car and hadn't secured it and it was dragging on the ground sparking and everything.

All he did was laugh at me and then he called his partner over and told him what I wanted and both of them had a good laugh together.

And they refused to give me a fix it ticket.

So I left with the cherry bomb still dragging on the ground sparks flying and everything.

My point is there isn't much you can do but maybe just maybe you can call DMV and tell them that you think your dad needs to be tested again but I don't think that they will follow up on it.

Or maybe you can call the police department and ask them what you can do.

I just hope they take you seriously.

Good luck.

Try talking to his doctor, if he is have any physical problems that could interfere with the safe operation of a vehicle the doctor could be resposible to report any situation to the dmv befrore he hurts himself or anyone else. Plus the doctor is some one he should listen to. Best wishes

Proper channels varies state to state but you should start with your states Highway Patrol. The troop that is closest to the area.
