Making a left turn on green light?

It's an unprotected left turn. Turn on your left turn signal for safety and turn as long as there is no oncoming traffic. You can wait in the middle as long as you know you can complete the turn before the light changes. Otherwise, wait behind the line.

(However, this is my knowledge of CA law. It may be different)

On the behind-the-wheel test, you always wait behind the line.

During normal driving, when you are not taking a test, and you are at an intersection where there is never a green left arrow, you pull up to the middle and wait until it is clear.

At an intersection where there are green left arrows at some point in the sequence, you wait behind the line until it is clear or you get a green left arrow.

Presuming you know for sure that the oncoming car is going to make its left turn, you can proceed to make your left turn if it is otherwise safe to do so - no other oncoming through traffic or pedestrians in the crosswalk on the street you are about to turn onto.

If you don't pull into the intersection (for a left turn), you might not be able to make a left turn until after rush hour traffic subsides. Normally, you cannot pull into an intersection unless you can clear to the other side - that is for through traffic. Left turn traffic isn't bound by that law. Believe it or not, it is a law - that you cannot block an intersection.

Where I live you legally have to stay behind the line, but no one does that. A cop has said something to me before about it. Some intersections you will never get the chance anyway and then you will get stragglers that run the red and then your stuck in the middle blocking traffic. I live in Miami though so it's like a different world down here

If you only see the green light but no arrow, you can pull to the middle and make a left turn carefully by yielding. But only one car is supposed to do that, so if you have a car in front of you and they are already in the middle, you should stop behind the line and wait for them go to.

That usually means u and the car in oncoming traffic can either turn left or go straight. U should both be able to turn at the same time since there should be enough room but say the car wants to go straight then u are suppose to yield to them.

In most areas, ONE vehicle is allowed to pull up over the crosswalk line with the front end of their vehicle, wheels straight, and wait until your path is clear (oncoming vehicles and other crosswalk/.road users approaching).

If an oncoming vehicle is making a left turn at the same time you are, you may proceed if your path is clear, because the oncoming, left-turning vehicle wont block your path. That vehicle is also making a left turn.

You may also complete your turn when your light turns yellow as long as your path is clear. This is why one vehicle may wait in the intersection when making a left turn at a solid green light. by allowing one vehicle to enter the intersection on a solid green light, awaiting a clear path or yellow light, keeps traffic moving. At least ONE vehicle will turn per light during times of heavy traffic.

You may also want to inquire about this at your local DMV office. Talk to an Examiner or leave them a note with your phone number.

I hope this information is helpful to you.
