Question:
Why don't they put manhole covers on road so that your tires straddle them?

Here in Canada I find that manhole covers are on the right or left side of the driving lane where your tires always run over them instead of in the centre of the driving lane so that cars can straddle the manhole covers. Any ideas why they do that? I seem to hit every manhole cover when I'm driving but I can't swerve around them, it would be like running an obstacle course.

it will take so much space and a bigger obstruction just in case they need to do some work. It's also a good traffic calming device.

Maybe you should call the city you live in and ask them.
