i personally think they should only be outside schools etc, places where people really should be below the limit, on motorways i understand if they are in roadworks to protect the workers, on a normal stretch, got to be money making scheme

They work quite well - here in Arizona we have some speed cameras on a major section of freeway, and they have helped reduce speed, accidents and fatalities greatly.
They are also far more accurate than a police officer and don't require an officer to patrol that stretch of road, which is a big savings for the local city considering the price of gas!

You don't need to burn them with Tyres or Push them Over with a truck. To render them useless you can put a black sock (or even a couple of layers of cling film) over the lense and the pictures will be useless.
In answer to the original question though. Yes they do work becuase where the cameras are located, people slow down.
However - In order for the police to have complete comtrol over how fast people go, they will need to install F1 style pit lane speed limiters with radars positioned at the side of the road and fittings in every car by law to initiate them.

do they work........well they detect speeding, yes
do they encourage people to keep to the limit....sometimes
are they money makers.....yes
are they JUST moneymakers.....no, because there is a deterent effect
I believe that this applies on all roads, regardless.
Despite my answers above, I am not a great supporter of them. I believe that they are over used in some areas, and the speed limits are set unreasonably low, in some areas (for example the 30mph limits on some 3 lane highways, for no apparent good reason)
I use a 'tom tom go' with speed camera detector software programmed into it

We used to have them here in Ontario Canada and they worked to good They were set to go off at 63 miles an hour(the hi-way speed limit here is 62 mph or 100kph) the cams were writing more tickets than any hi-way patrol man ever could But a politician won an election by saying would get rid of them and he did. Then he pillaged for several years.

the theory behind speed cameras is that they are positioned in areas of high accidents or where certain pedestrians could get badly injured like outside schools.
the reality of them is they are put in places where they will be most profitable like that one what got me in leicester. funny thing is when the letter came from the leicestershire piggery (ok leicestershire constabulary) they sent a map of all the speed cameras located in leicestershire.....

They don't 'work' if it's to reduce speeding.
