Take a look at this article: http://www.newsweek.com/id/153932

It's about a service called "Steer Straight" for parents of teen drivers started by two women in Massachusetts. Basically they give you a bumper sticker stating something like "HOW'S MY TEEN DRIVING" similar to the "HOW'S MY DRIVING" stickers on big rigs, including a phone number to report bad (or maybe good) driving. Once the call center receives a call, they notify the parents within 15 minutes.

As a teen driver, how would you feel about your parents having this much control over you?

As a parent, would you pay for this service if something similar opened up in your state? Do you think this would be effective?

What do you think are the pros and cons of the program?

I installed a "Car Chip" on my daughter's car. It records the speed of the car every second, the exact time the car is started and shut off and whether she has been doing hard barking or acceleration past certain levels. I just download the date into my PC every now and then and have a look.

I paid for the car and insurance so I feel I can know this stuff.

And I did tell her it is there. So it she does something stupid, she cannot claim to be surprised. Just keeping a good teen age driver honest.

Also it records engine performance and fault codes.

So how is my daughter driving? I know. I don't need someone to call me.

The Car Chip is $100 and plugs into the OBD II connector.

well i guess it would be an idea but really why would you pay for a service every month id rather just install one of those tracking gps you can tell where they went the time they went there the mph they were going, then you don't have to believe other peoples

plus that seems a little hypocritical, cuz we all drive like morons sometimes (well at least here in michigan) otherwise you get run over..

i'm no longer a be certain yet as a teenager (22 yrs previous) i assumed i could provide my opinion. i'm commonly very adverse to monitoring instruments and such exceedingly for infants yet i think of you're being thoroughly sensible. first and ideal, you probably did no longer attempt hiding it out of your daughter. you have been honest along with her approximately your expectancies and why you felt the gps is needed. even although she has wiped clean up her act, her previous strikes make it so as which you incredibly prefer some greater time to have confidence her and that i do no longer blame you in any respect. her having get admission to to a motor vehicle for sure supplies her lots greater get admission to to the stuff that replaced into getting her into worry interior the 1st place. you're being very honest giving her a touch greater freedom yet nonetheless keeping her below your watch. if i've got been on your place i does not budge in this. %. a undeniable quantity of time you will shop the gps interior the motor vehicle, no count if that be 2 months or a year, and if she does not like it she would be at liberty to no longer use the motor vehicle. and that i do no longer comprehend lots approximately technologies yet be confident there isn't any way she will take the gps out or mess with it in any respect to attempt to ruin out with something sneaky. sturdy success!! in 5 or 10 years your daughter will thank you for worrying approximately her wellbeing and comprehend which you have been basically attempting to guard her.

Bad idea.

Cons

If they were driving badly, they would have been pulled over.

In my state, it is illegal to use cell phones.

Those stickers only distract people from driving.

Noone pays attention to them.

If you don't want your kids driving, then don't let them get a license.

Parents having too much control?

They probably purchased the car.

The are probably paying for the insurance.

They are paying for the gas.

They bought the clothes on you back.

they are paying for you meals and living conditions.

No, no. Not too much control since they actually own the car and you too until you start contributing to the family by something other than your being there..

I wouldn't trust it.

Someone could ring just for badness and say they were speeding or whatever thinking it funny.
