Really anytime you purchase a used car you're risking reliabilty. It really depends on how well the car was taken car of. If you purchase used, try to get maintenance records for the vehicle, a good owner will keep these things. For safety, again have the used car checked out before purchasing to be sure that the car has not been hit or rebuilt in any way. You can read all the safety ratings all day, but if the car was previously damaged and fixed (and you really can't tell with just a visual inspection) your car may or may not be safe.
